I got to meet Henry last week. He’s one month old and growing so fast. Molly (his mom) booked me for a photo session in their Saint Paul apartment off the river. We set him in his crib and he started taking big stretches and yawns. This is Molly’s first child and she was eager to get photos while he was still small. At one month old, he’s growing faster than other kids his age. I remarked that typically a newborn is about the size of a chipotle burrito. This kid was already 4 of those. That’s why people book me for newborn photography sessions. The remarkable color commentary.
While photographing some pictures of Molly and Henry in the rocking chair their golden retriever started to really want attention. You see, this is the first child for Molly and her Husband and the golden retriever was there first. He’s one month into being second on the list for attention and I don’t think he enjoys it.
Baby Henry did so well during the session and had very few crying fits. To try and keep the situation low key for the newborn, I turned off the shutter actuator on my canon r6.
So it only uses an electronic shutter. When I’m photographing you can hear a small beep but really no noise. I also elected just to use natural light to avoid anything alarming for the baby. The problem with this is that I took 1,000 photos and thought I had only taken 100 because I can’t tell how many are being taken when photographing. That’s ok, it’s a problem I’ll deal with. My friend Alexandra Robyn Photography suggested I use a white noise machine when photographing newborns and it was a big hit. Molly used her phone for some white noise and the session went off without a hitch.
I’m thankful to get to capture these memories for mom’s and families. It’s not lost on me what a privilege it is to be able to photograph people for a living. Enjoy some of the pictures below.
Newborn photography is something I really enjoy. The simple lifestyle newborn sessions are relatively simple if everything is planned well (and a little luck with the baby not having a melt down). From what I’ve learned if the mom feeds the baby right before the session and gives the baby a burp, the child is more likely to be calm for the session. Finding positions that your child is comfortable in also helps. If the baby likes to be on his stomach, let your photographer know and we can put them in that position to get the most of out of the session.
Locating near a window is paramount as the natural light always looks best. Like every photography session, I turn off the lights and move the subject as close to the window as possible to let some of that natural light come in. Having white noise and a relatively calm environment also helps keep the child calm which goes a long ways.
