Capturing Memories with Tim Thornburg Films: A Family Photoshoot with Swarnima and Peter in Minnetonka and Purgatory Creek Park
When I’m photographing families, I often am trying to find new places to have family photo sessions around Minneapolis. I want to find places that are new, fresh, look great and can provide great backgrounds for my clients. Recently, I had the pleasure of photographing Swarnima and Peter with their family in Minnetonka and the scenic Purgatory Creek Park.
With its expansive green spaces and serene landscapes, Purgatory Creek offered a perfect backdrop for the candid, documentary-style photography I strive to create. My goal is to deliver a film-like look in all the family sessions I capture.
When I work with families, I look for moments that bring out authentic emotions—the gentle laugh of a child, a shared look between parents, or a spontaneous embrace. My approach is all about letting these moments unfold naturally. Swarnima and Peter were fantastic to work with; they let their kids explore, play, and laugh, making every shot feel like a frame from a movie, full of genuine expressions and unscripted joy.
Choosing to shoot in both Minnetonka and Purgatory Creek allowed us to capture a variety of moods. The golden-hour light at the park added a soft, cinematic touch, enhancing the film-like aesthetic I aim for. This style is especially popular among families seeking Minneapolis family photography, as it ensures that each image feels like a slice of real life—a snapshot of the beauty in everyday moments.
