Super 8 film has been around for a while.
In fact, in 1970 that was the chosen medium for capturing wedding videos and recording those precious memories. From Weddings, recitals, holidays, and all the other important events. Nearly 50 years later the format of super 8 film is still around. So, when I decided to start offering it as part of my wedding video packages I asked around to see what all the hype was about.
I asked a friend of mine, Jesper, who captures Super 8 film exclusively why he got into filming events super 8. After all, each film roll captures 3 minutes of film and after processing it costs me roughly $120 for 3 minutes of footage. That’s a lot of money for 3 minutes.
He explained, “(it cost a lot)…….Yet I’m sure I don’t have to tell you that there’s a certain magic in stuff captured in Super 8, and despite my frugality I find it worth every penny and the best way I’ve found to capture events.”
Jesper raises some good points. I don’t think there’s anything quite like the nostalgia of watching back video captured on film. It creates an authenticity that sometimes is missing with modern cinema cameras. The shaky footage, the colors, the limited amount of film almost makes it more true to life than modern cameras.

When I first started offering Super 8 films for weddings I was the videographer at I got some funny looks. The camera looks silly, it makes an odd noise when it’s running film and it feels like you’re entering a Toyota Corolla into a NASCAR race when compared with my other gear. But, the vintage feel, the nostalgic vibe, and the true-to-life colors from the camera continue to create magic in the wedding videos I offer so I’ll continue to offer it.
While the camera body looks silly at times, I’m proud to continue offering super 8 film as a Wedding Videographer. If you’re interested in learning more about super 8 to capture your event feel free to reach out through my email. tim.thornburg@gmail.com
